Frequently Asked Questions

What is the relationship between the current church and the cemetery?

Swannanoa Presbyterian Church closed its doors for the final time in 20XX.  In 2015, Piney Grove Cemetery, Inc. was chartered as a separate non-profit corporation.  The cemetery land was separated from the church as a separate parcel.  Ultimately, the Presbyterian Synod sold the church and some surrounding land to One Focus Church.  While we each make every effort to be good neighbors, the church and the cemetery are not affiliated in any way.

Does Piney Grove Cemetery have any plots to sell?

The quick answer is no.  Our organization does not own any plots.  However, from time-to-time, we are contacted by a family wishing to sell their plots.  In that case, we will make their wishes known and arrange a contact between that family and a family wishing to purchase a plot in the Piney Grove Cemetery.  Once the contact has been made, the transfer of property is between the two families.

What if I cannot find the deed to a plot I know my family purchased at Piney Grove Cemetery years ago?

It would be prudent to work with a local attorney to locate a deed to a burial plot.  Piney Grove Cemetery holds no deeds for the pre-existing sales of gravesites.

Does Piney Grove Cemetery provide burial or interment services?

No, Piney Grove Cemetery does not provide any burial or interment services.  Such services are provided by the mortuary company of your choosing.

Does Piney Grove Cemetery charge a fee for burials and interments in the cemetery?

Yes, Piney Grove Cemetery charges $100 for each burial or interment.  This fee is typically collected by the funeral home in charge of the service and passed on to the Cemetery by way of check.  If not, the family can mail a check to Piney Grove Cemetery at P.O. Box 216, Swannanoa, NC  28778.

When should and should not a burial or an interment take place?
  • Piney Grove Cemetery requires ALL burials and interments arrive in the cemetery before 4:00 pm.
  • There will be NO burials on Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas days.
  • Sunday burials or interments must occur after 2:00 pm due to proximity to the neighboring church.
For more information on the policies and specifications of burials and interments, markers and monuments, disinterments and transfer of graves, see Notices & Policies, here.
